The rookie of the year race was decided before the All-Star break now now that Atlanta Hawks’ guard Trae Young is playing his best basketball, it is a close race. Is Dallas Maverick forward Luka Doncic going to win the award or will it be Young.
What makes this story even more interesting is that the Hawks traded down to draft Young with the Mavericks. Dallas moved up from five to three to draft Doncic and both of these players have been associated together since.
When the season started, Doncic got off to a good start whereas Young was struggling. He was not used to the NBA speed and size. However, he has gotten used to it know and knows how to score and pass. But will it be a little too late?
Doncic has a head start and if he keeps playing the way he is, he should win the Rookie of the Year Award. The Dallas rookie is averaging 21 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per game and 5.6 assists per game. Those are solid numbers and most player with those numbers would easily win the award.
Young isn’t too far behind but he needs to play much better for the remainder of the year if he wants to win the award. He is averaging 18.3 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game and 7.8 assists per game. The numbers lean towards Doncic and unless Young plays like a superstar player, he may be able to win it.
In the last ten games, Young is averaging 26.3 points per game and scored 49 points and had 15 assists. He is the first rookie to score that much points and have that many assists in a game. His late streak has helped him reenter the rookie of the year conversation but it might be too late.
His opponent has also begun accustoming himself to the NBA. Doncic has been getting better as the months passed by and he is already near stardom. He is able to get triple doubles with ease and make step back shots as good as James Harden. That is an amazing category to be in.
The last couple of months will be intense because Young has finally solved the NBA. Now the NBA will try to solve him. Can he still dominate when teams swarm him? I think he should be able to but I don’t think he will keep up his stellar performance. Doncic will ultimately win the award. Or Ben Simmons, who knows.
