Dirk Nowitzki has officially announced that he plans to retire after the end of this season. He has played for the Dallas Mavericks for 21 seasons and holds the record for the longest span spent with one team.
Many people speculated that Nowitzki was going to retire after this season but hadn’t commented on it until today in Dallas against the Phoenix Suns. He scored 30 points in the final game in front of the Dallas crowd.
Watching Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade retire this season is heartbreaking and also amazing. While we don’t want these two Hall-of-Famers to retire, we remember all they did for the sport of basketball. Both of them paved the way for many players and have left their imprint on the game.
“This is obviously super, super emotional,” Nowitzki said. “Just too many people to really thank. I put you guys on a helluva ride with a lot of ups and downs, and you guys always stuck with me and supported me, so I appreciate it.”
Not many players are as loved as Nowitzki was. Not only was he a great basketball player, he was also an amazing person. There isn’t even one bad story about him. That speaks volume especially because everything surfaces in the social media age.
The 14 time All-Star will be forever remembered for his fade-away shot that was impossible to block and frustrated hundreds of NBA players throughout the years. Even in his 21st year, he was still able to fade away and make that shot. There are great NBA players and then there are people like Nowitzki who will be remembered for years to come.
