The Denver Nuggets will be facing the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round of the 2019 playoffs. Both teams have had a great year but only one can continue on to the Western Conference Finals. Who will it be?
Before we discuss the match-ups, let’s discuss the improbability of the Trail Blazers to even make it this far. They lost their starting center Jusuf Nirkic and faced a healthy Oklahoma Thunder team. On paper, the Thunder looked like the better team but the Blazers made quick work and beat them in five games. In that win, the Blazers’ backup center Enes Kanter hurt his shoulder and is not healthy.
Now the Blazers are facing a Nuggets team that relies on their big man. This is a really bad match-up for them because of the injuries. With that said, let’s finally talk about the second round match-up. In the first round, the Nuggets struggled against a good San Antonio Spurs team and that made me question how good the Nuggets really were. They proved me wrong and won the first game in the series against the Blazers.
With a 1-0 series lead, will the Nuggets win or are the Blazers going to bounce back? What we have seen from the Blazers is that they are a high powered offensive team. With Damian Lillard leading the charge, they are a force to be reckoned with. That is why the Nuggets will focus on him and play him with full court defense. That worked in Game 1 but expect a few changes from the Blazers. Playing full court defense doesn’t always work because all you really need to do is set a screen at the half court and you now have a fast break.
I believe this series will go to seven games because we will see a lot of counter strategies. I think the Blazers will win but the Nuggets have a good chance since they have the healthier roster. Who do you think will win?
